BLYC Ancient Mariners Lake Erie Cruise

Monday, May 24, 2021

This morning, May 24, 2021, the BLYC “Ancient Mariners” – Chuck Bendig, Jerry Besanceney, Don Harris, Rick Henderson, Russ Long (Hoover SC), and Tom Shain left the protected waters of Buckeye Lake to travel to Huron, Ohio where they will charter a 41′ Hunter, White Pine, for the week for their annual Lake Erie Cruise.  The itinerary for this year’s trip was still being finalized as COVID-related restrictions still prohibit entering Canadian waters.  However, they left the dock this morning and plan to cruise at least to Kelley’s and South Bass Islands (Put-in-Bay), returning to Huron on Thursday.

They plan to send in daily updates on their adventures and we will share them with you here on the SLOG.  Forecasted winds are light and variable for today and tomorrow, then building overnight Tuesday through their return to Huron on Thursday – it could get “quite sporty” out there.

On a related note, the Annual Mills Trophy Race is being sailed on Lake Erie the night of Friday, June 11th this year.  This is an overnight, distance race sailed from Toledo near the mouth of the Maumee to Put-in-Bay.  For the past several years, BLYC’s own Steve Harris has been the PRO for the past several years and several other BLYC members have helped on Race Committee too.  However, it has been decades since there was an entry from BLYC racing the event.  That changes in 2021!  BLYC member Jeffery Robb, along with crew Bill Collinson & David Paligo are entered in the Cruising Class aboard Robb’s 46′ Hunter, Ariel.  We wish them all of the best in the event.  They’ll certainly share a report with us for the SLOG at the conclusion of the event.

THANKS FOR REPRESENTING BLYC GENTLEMEN!
