The news the past few weeks has been tough on our youth sailors at the Club. Junior Bay Week has been cancelled for 2020 and at least the first half of the Travelers Series has been cancelled as well. But…
DO NOT DESPAIR!
We’re going to race right here at Buckeye Lake this year. As a part of the weekly Sunday Series, we are including a “Juniors Dinghy Fleet” open to all youth sailors under the age of 21 – Optimist, Laser, 420*, FJ* – race the dinghy you’re comfortable in or want to learn more about and you can compete for your very own “BLYC Junior Championship” Trophy (details to be determined). All boats will be handicapped using Portsmouth Yardstick calculations.
* guidelines are still being evaluated. It is possible that only singlehanded boats will be allowed

This past Saturday, June 1st, Buckeye Lake Yacht Club hosted the kickoff to the 2019 I-LYA Traveler Series. Seventy-five youth sailors, aged 6-17, made the trip to Buckeye Lake, east of Columbus, and enjoyed a great day of racing. Buckeye Lake, after several years of low water, was back in top form with comfortable temperatures and steady southwest winds blowing 6-15 knots. Spectators lined the piers of BLYC and the new North Shore bike path to watch the racing up close. The series continues next week at Alum Creek Sailing Club in Lewis Center, Ohio and will continue throughout the summer with the finale at Hoover Sailing Club in August.
Thank you to all of the BLYC volunteers who made this event successful. It was truly a team effort and the comments from competitors, parents, and other visitors were very complimentary of the Club and the event.

After several years off the water, Buckeye Lake is back! BLYC has been selected to host the first I-LYA Junior Travelers Series Regatta of the 2019 season – Saturday, June 1 2019! This is a great opportunity for us to show off our Club and lake as this regatta will attract dozens of youth sailors from all over the Lake Erie region – Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, & Indiana. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Plans are very preliminary at this time, but it’ll take a strong group of volunteers from the Club to host this event. If you are interested in joining in on the fun, please contact Mike Bruckelmeyer.
