BLYC Ancient Mariners Lake Erie Cruise

Monday, May 24, 2021

This morning, May 24, 2021, the BLYC “Ancient Mariners” – Chuck Bendig, Jerry Besanceney, Don Harris, Rick Henderson, Russ Long (Hoover SC), and Tom Shain left the protected waters of Buckeye Lake to travel to Huron, Ohio where they will charter a 41′ Hunter, White Pine, for the week for their annual Lake Erie Cruise.  The itinerary for this year’s trip was still being finalized as COVID-related restrictions still prohibit entering Canadian waters.  However, they left the dock this morning and plan to cruise at least to Kelley’s and South Bass Islands (Put-in-Bay), returning to Huron on Thursday.

They plan to send in daily updates on their adventures and we will share them with you here on the SLOG.  Forecasted winds are light and variable for today and tomorrow, then building overnight Tuesday through their return to Huron on Thursday – it could get “quite sporty” out there.

On a related note, the Annual Mills Trophy Race is being sailed on Lake Erie the night of Friday, June 11th this year.  This is an overnight, distance race sailed from Toledo near the mouth of the Maumee to Put-in-Bay.  For the past several years, BLYC’s own Steve Harris has been the PRO for the past several years and several other BLYC members have helped on Race Committee too.  However, it has been decades since there was an entry from BLYC racing the event.  That changes in 2021!  BLYC member Jeffery Robb, along with crew Bill Collinson & David Paligo are entered in the Cruising Class aboard Robb’s 46′ Hunter, Ariel.  We wish them all of the best in the event.  They’ll certainly share a report with us for the SLOG at the conclusion of the event.

THANKS FOR REPRESENTING BLYC GENTLEMEN!

Spring Series – Week #2

May 23, 2021

Temp: 87*F
Humidity: 47%
Wind: NNW 4-9 knot
Course: A (S-1-2-F)

Buckeye Lake Sail-On-Sunday is taking off with renewed enthusiasm. Week 2 had three
Catalina Capri 22’s out of the 9 registered sailboats going to the start line. Winds were
steady/unsteady and fluky at times but we were able to get 2 races in the record books
towards the Commodore Chris J. Lambrecht Cup Trophy.

As BLYC sailing & racing is making this strong comeback, it is exciting to see more sailboats on the water and the FUN “family style” competition on Racers Row and then teams going on the water to practice timing and working to remove the rust & cobwebs from our long winter.

The after-race social is becoming a place to ask fellow competitor’s on how a team can improve in next week’s race. Buckeye Lake Sailboat Racing is BACK. Who is the next team to chase the ‘Rabbits Flag’ for a week? It can be your Team.

Thank you, Race Committee, for an excellent job setting up the course and the start of racing
on time.

Spring Series – Race #1

Temperature – 62°F
Humidity – 56%
Wind – 7 kts, south, decreasing to 2 kts
Course – B (S-1-2-1-2-F)

The 2021 BLYC Sailing/Racing Season has officially started with the entry of more boats this season.

With the winds directly out of the South, RC announced we would be using a skewed triangle course with a Start/Finish line and around two marks. Because of the wind direction and the course layout it would be a beam reach around the entire course. It was announced at the skippers meeting we would be doing two laps and if the winds die RC could shorten course at the start/finish.

At 1300 hours, we opened the season with a blessing from our Fleet Chaplin Father Mike. The race started with a steady 7 knots and it looked promising to get 2-laps in. As the boats were rounding mark 2, the wind slowed to 3-4 knots and by the time they got to the finish line they were at 2 knots.

Big thanks go out to all who are working hard to make 2021 Sailing/Racing a successful season.

Congratulations Team Reflection!

Following the day’s racing, they were seen sailing past the Club with the Rabbit Flag hoisted high!

Safety at Sea Training

– by Steve Harris

Recently, a few of us were discussing the upcoming Mills Trophy Race on Lake Erie.  Some of our members are considering entering this year.  The Mills is an overnight distance race starting at the Toledo Lighthouse and ending at Put-in-Bay.  Many Lake Erie sailors consider it a “must do” each season – it’s certainly an adventure.  I’ve been fortunate to serve as Principal Race Officer for this historic event – cancelled last year due to COVID-19, 2021 will be the 97th running of this event.  Being a coastal event, there’s a lot more prep that goes into planning to race in the Mills.  One of the requirements for all crews is US Sailing’s Safety at Sea training.  Traditionally, this was conducted as a two-day, in person course, but like many trainings lately, US Sailing has made an online training option available. Further information is below….

Whether you’re planning to race an event like the Mills, looking to cruise on Lake Erie this summer, or just want to brush up on your safety knowledge and preparedness, I highly recommend taking the training and getting certified in Safety at Sea.  I recently completed the online coastal Safety at Sea Training.  It took a few hours to go through all of the modules, but it was very straightforward, easy to understand, and informative.  Yes – even on shallow Buckeye Lake bad things sometimes happen!  You can never be too prepared.
